Highly Anticipated Animated Films This 2016

There are a slew of animated films that are coming from 2016 and beyond, and we’ve come up with the most anticipated of the bunch. Among them is The Angry Birds film adaptation and a few much awaited sequels to hit movies over the years.

So without further ado, here are the most highly anticipated animated films that are on the way to cinemas or currently under production. (Note: release dates are subject to change without notice.)

1. Finding Dory

When Finding Nemo came out last 2003, it touched the hearts of many. It tells the story of a lost little clown fish and his father’s brave and desperate search for him across the ocean. Now one of the movie’s main characters is getting her own titular film.

There has long been rumors that Dory, voiced by the one and only Ellen DeGeneres, would be getting her very own movie. Now that it’s finally happening, audiences can hardly wait to catch the film when it hits theaters this June.

2. The Secret Life of Pets

Release date: July 8, 2016


The stellar cast includes the likes of Kevin Hart and Eric Stonestreet. The film follows a pair of pets lost in the streets of Manhattan. Together, they must try to overcome their difference and try to outwit a terrible bunny rabbit with an evil ploy that would sabotage pet owners forever. The hilarious film is brought to you by the studio behind the highly successful Minions movie.

3. Angry Birds Movie

Release date: May 20, 2016


The number one played game in the world is finally becoming an animated film. Fans would be thrilled to see characters taken directly from the game itself. It most likely will be following the same plot too, so expect some laughs and thrills as these flightless birds taken on ugly green pigs in one epic battle.

4. Sausage Party

Release date: August 12, 2016


When you put the creators of the comedy movie This Is the End together, you’re bound to get something raunchy but terribly funny. So when Seth Rogen announced that he’ll be working to create the very first R-Rated animated film, it got people excited. The trailer shows grocery food discovering for the first time what their actual use in this world is.

5. Trolls

Release date: November 4, 2016


Trolls is Dreamworks’ up and coming animated film. It promises to be funny and smart, with a cast that features Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. Although no full trailer has been released yet, it is previously reported that the plot is about a group of trolls who are forced to work together and avoid a troll eating giant at the same time.

6. Moana

Release date: November 23, 2016


Moana is poised to join the ranks of other Disney heroines. Her announcement brought a lot of media attention as she was named the first Polynesian princess ever developed by Disney. It is all about a teenager who encounters a demi-god along the way, and together they set out on an epic mission around Oceania.

7. Lego Batman

Release date: February 10, 2017


Lego became an unexpected hit, so it was only fitting to give one of the unforgettable characters his very own spin-off. The masked crusader, who prefers working alone, has to take on The Joker in this full-length film.

9. The Story of Ferdinand

Release date: July 21, 2017


The Story of Ferdinand was a worldwide hit, and it also became one of Mahatma Gandhi‘s most favorite books. It tells the story of a kind bull who would rather be gentle than participate in bull fights. Now the book is getting a movie adaptation and is set to be released in CGI format. No official list of cast has been released yet.

10. Coco

Release date: November 22, 2017


Coco is inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. Little is known about the plot as a full trailer has yet to be released. It is supposed to center around a young boy named Miguel who faces a chain of events and starts an unexpected family reunion.

11. Gigantic

Release date: TBA 2018

Now here’s something that is sure to be a hit among audiences! From the studio that brought you Frozen comes Gigantic, a retelling of the classic Jack and the Beanstalk story. Set in Spain, Jack encounters Inma, a 60 feet young giant. Together, they team up to protect the world from the threat of human eating giants.
