Albus Dumbledore

Actors Who Can Play Albus Dumbledore for the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel

Harry Potter fans have recently been treated with a triumphant return to the wizarding world courtesy of the highly successful spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The sequel follows the charming protagonist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his quest to round up magical beasts that have let loose in 1920s New York City. Aside from the sprawling beasts, central to the plot is the threat of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp in a cameo appearance), who happens to have fostered a friendship with Albus Dumbledore.

While no official casting news have been made, here are ExploreTalent’s top picks to play a young Albus Dumbledore for the Fantastic Beasts.

5 Actors Who Can Play Young Albus Dumbledore

1. Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy

Harry Potter fans know that Albus Dumbledore was not always the noble headmaster of Hogwarts. Back when he was younger, he was power hungry and cunning. If there is one actor that can portray those characteristics perfectly, it has to be Cillian Murphy. Murphy is a versatile actor, having starred in multiple films such as Inception, The Dark Knight, and Red Eye.

2. Luke Evans

Luke Evans

Luke Evans has already dabbled his feet into the fantasy genre, with roles in The Hobbit and Dracula. He’ll also be seen alongside Potter alumna Emma Watson in the 2017 Disney film Beauty and the Beasts where he’ll be playing Gaston. So why wouldn’t he be perfect for the role of Dumbledore? To add, author J.K. Rowling has confirmed that Dumbledore is gay, and Evans has always been open about his sexuality, making this casting choice a big step for Hollywood.

3. Damien Lewis

Damien Lewis

In the books, Albus Dumbledore was described to have auburn hair during his youth, so Homeland actor Damien Lewis just fits the part. He also happens to be in his forties, which fits Dumbledore’s age in the film. Lewis has a knack for playing characters with complex personalities, so you can count on him for bringing justice to the role.

4. Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender

At 39, Michael Fassbender may be a little too young to play Albus Dumbledore. But since the list has included both Evans and Murphy who are in their late 30s, then Fassbender seems like a likely choice as well. He can play both a character that is both passionate and fearsome as evidenced by his take on Magneto for the X-Men films.

5. James McAvoy

James McAvoy

Fassbender’s X-Men co-star is also a top choice for the role of Albus Dumbledore. James McAvoy has a boyish charm and gentleness that no actor in this list possesses. But as one of the most talented actors in the business, McAvoy can go from sincere to boastful in an instant and that might be exactly the Dumbledore Rowling had in mind.
