Before Scarlett Johansson joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the feisty Russian spy Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, there were other actresses who were also considered for the coveted role.
Black Widow is considere to be one of the most important protagonists in Marvel films, as her sheer loyalty and profound judgement really balances out the whole cast. Her popularity has grown so vast, the rumor mill has been going crazy about a solo movie coming soon. With that said, it may be hard to imagine another woman taking the part other than Johansson. But believe it or not, the other contenders on this list are equally as alluring as she is.
So without further ado, here are the actresses who came really close to becoming Black Widow brought to you by ExploreTalent.
5 Talented Actresses Who Almost Played Black Widow
5. Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel may be lying a little low in terms of Hollywood movie nowadays, but that would have changed had she been cast for the role of Black Widow. She would have been great for the role as Biel did have previous experience in the Marvel Universe after playing a vampire hunter in Blade: Trinity.
4. Jessica Alba
Another Jessica on this list is Jessica Alba, who like Biel is no stranger to playing a superhero in the Marvel Universe. If you may recall, she did star as Sue Storm in the first Fantastic Four franchise alongside Captain America himself, Chris Evans. In the end, Alba didn’t get the part, but she enjoyed a lot of success in the industry over the years. She’s now a happy mother, an entrepreneur, and producer. Alba still has a few credits under her name, but she’s laid low from superhero films.
3. Angelina Jolie
It is no surprise to see Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie as one of the top contenders for the role. After all, her action scenes in the Tomb Raider series really proved how well-versed Jolie is with the genre. She also oozes a natural sex appeal as well, and it is safe to say that it can even rival that of Johansson. Jolie eventually got to to play a Russian spy in the 2010 film Salt.
2. Natalie Portman
People may know this Oscar-winning actress from the Star Wars prequels, and even if the movies weren’t that great, Natalie Portman continued to charm her way to the audience’s hearts as Padme Amidala. In the end, Portman ended up playing Jane Foster in two of the Thor movies. But sadly, the actress recently confirmed that she won’t be returning for the third installment.
1. Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt didn’t just turn down the role of Black Widow, but she passed on playing Agent Carter from Captain America as well. Blunt had said that this difficult decision was made due to scheduling conflicts. A fun fact to take note of here is that Blunt’s husband, John Krasinski, almost made the cut as Captain America.
